The same home today, with window AC units, a modern kitchen, a home office, and a full bathroom on every floor, draws 80 to 100 amps during a hot summer evening. That is the full capacity of the panel, and the panel was not designed to run at full capacity continuously. When everything runs at once, the breakers trip.
Why Summer Is Worse
Air Conditioning Load
A single window AC unit draws 8 to 15 amps depending on size. Two or three units in an older home can add 30 to 40 amps of demand that the panel was never designed to carry. Can I just add a bigger breaker to stop the tripping?
No, and doing so is dangerous. A breaker protects the wire behind it. A 20 amp breaker protects 12-gauge wire from carrying more than 20 amps, which would overheat it.
