An upgrade increases the service, usually 100 to 200 amps, and involves the meter base and service entrance too. Which electrical panel brands have known safety problems?
The two named most often are Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels and Zinsco panels, both common in homes built from the 1950s through the 1970s. The concern is breakers that may not trip reliably under fault. If you have one, it is worth having looked at — not as a scare tactic, but because a breaker that does not trip defeats the point of having one.
Can a single bad breaker be replaced instead of the whole box?
Usually yes. A single failed breaker on an otherwise sound, current-model panel is a small job, and we would not replace a whole box to fix one breaker. The whole box comes into question when the panel brand is unreliable, breakers are no longer made for it, or the cabinet itself is corroded or scorched.
What does a rusted or scorched breaker box mean?
Rust means moisture has been getting in, which is a problem around live connections. Scorching or a burnt smell means something has been overheating, usually a loose connection or a breaker working too hard. Neither is something to paint over or ignore.
