Why Storm Season Matters for Electrical Systems

Central Kentucky’s storm season runs roughly from April through September, with the most intense weather concentrated in May and June. The region gets thunderstorms with lightning, straight-line winds, and occasional tornadoes that affect electrical systems in three ways: voltage surges from lightning, physical damage to service entrance equipment from wind and falling limbs, and flooding that compromises wiring and panels in basements and crawl spaces.

How Surges Happen

When lightning strikes near a power line, it induces a voltage spike that travels through the utility grid and enters your home through the service entrance. The spike can be thousands of volts above normal, lasting only microseconds but carrying enough energy to damage circuit boards in appliances, computers, and HVAC systems.

Utility switching — when the power company reroutes circuits after a storm — also produces surges, though smaller ones. These smaller surges cause cumulative damage to electronics over time.

What the Surge Protector Does

A whole-house surge protector installs at the electrical panel and diverts voltage spikes to ground before they reach your circuits. It does not consume power during normal operation and activates only when voltage exceeds a threshold. The device is a modest investment relative to what it protects and lasts ten to fifteen years before needing replacement.

Point-of-use surge strips provide additional protection at individual outlets but do not replace the whole-house unit. The panel-level protector catches the largest surges before they reach the house wiring. The outlet strip catches smaller surges that make it past the panel protector.

Service Entrance Protection

Tree Limbs and the Service Drop

The service drop is the wire from the utility pole to your house. In many central Kentucky homes, this wire runs through or near tree canopy. A falling limb can pull the wire off the house, damage the weatherhead, or bring the utility wire down entirely.

Before storm season, look at the path between the utility pole and your house. If tree limbs are within reach of the wire, have them trimmed. The utility company will trim limbs that threaten their lines, but limbs on your property that threaten your service drop are your responsibility.

Weatherhead and Mast Condition

The weatherhead is the cap at the top of the service entrance pipe where the utility wire connects. Over time, the weatherhead cap cracks, the sealant deteriorates, and water enters the conduit. Water in the service entrance conduit runs down to the meter base and the panel, causing corrosion from the inside.

A visual check from the ground with binoculars can reveal obvious damage. If the weatherhead is tilted, the cap is missing, or the mast is bent, call an electrician before storm season rather than after the first storm makes it worse.

Flooding Preparation

Know Your Main Breaker

If water enters your home and reaches the electrical panel, basement outlets, or the crawl space where wiring runs, you need to shut off the main breaker before the water contacts energised equipment. Know where your main breaker is and how to operate it before you need to do it in the dark during a storm.

Elevate or Protect Panel Equipment

If your panel is in a basement that has flooded before, consider having it relocated to a higher position or to the main floor. This is a significant project, but it eliminates the most dangerous intersection of water and electricity in your home.

Post-Storm Checks

After a significant storm, check the following:

  • Service entrance: look at the weatherhead and the wire from the pole. If anything is hanging, leaning, or on the ground, stay away and call the utility and an electrician.
  • Panel: open the cover and look for signs of water entry, tripped breakers, or scorch marks.
  • Outdoor outlets and fixtures: check for water in outlet boxes and damage to exterior fixtures.
  • Basement and crawl space: check for standing water near wiring and outlets.
