Flickering Lights: When It Is Normal and When to Call

When Flickering Is Normal
Not every flicker is a problem. Some causes are benign and some are expected behaviour of the electrical system.
Large Motor Startup
Air conditioners, heat pumps, well pumps, and other large motors draw a brief surge of current when they start. This surge causes a momentary voltage dip on the circuit and sometimes on the entire panel, which shows up as a quick dim in the lights. If the dim lasts less than a second and the lights return to full brightness, this is normal. The motor’s starting current is within the system’s design parameters.
LED Bulb and Dimmer Incompatibility
LED bulbs are sensitive to the type of dimmer switch they are paired with. An older dimmer designed for incandescent bulbs may cause an LED to flicker, strobe, or glow faintly when turned off. This is annoying but not dangerous. The fix is replacing the dimmer with one rated for LED loads, which is a ten-minute swap.
Loose Bulb
A bulb that is not fully seated in its socket can flicker when the fixture vibrates. Ceiling fans are the most common location. Tighten the bulb and the flicker stops. If the socket itself is loose or damaged, replacing the socket or the fixture is the fix.
When Flickering Is a Warning Sign
Flickering in Multiple Rooms
If lights in more than one room flicker at the same time, the problem is not at a single fixture. It is upstream: at the panel, the service entrance, or the utility connection. A loose neutral at the panel or the meter can cause voltage fluctuations across the entire house that show up as simultaneous flickering in multiple rooms.
This is one of the more serious flickering causes because a loose neutral can also cause overvoltage on some circuits while undervoltaging others, which damages electronics and appliances.
Flickering That Started Recently
Lights that have always been steady and suddenly begin flickering indicate a change in the circuit. Something loosened, broke, or deteriorated. Connections loosen over time due to thermal cycling, and a connection that was marginal for years can cross the threshold into intermittent contact. The sooner a new flicker is diagnosed, the less damage accumulates at the connection point.
Flickering Accompanied by Other Symptoms
Flickering combined with any of these symptoms warrants immediate attention:
- A buzzing or crackling sound at a switch, outlet, or the panel
- A burning or hot smell near a fixture, switch, or outlet
- A switch or outlet plate that is warm to the touch
- Scorching or discoloration around an outlet or switch
These symptoms together indicate an active connection problem that is generating heat. The combination is a fire risk.
Persistent Flicker on a Single Circuit
A light that flickers on its own circuit, independent of other loads starting, has a connection problem somewhere between the panel and the fixture. The loose point could be at the breaker terminal, at a splice in a junction box, at the switch, or at the fixture itself. Diagnosing the location requires testing at each point along the circuit.
How an Electrician Diagnoses Flickering
The process starts at the panel and works outward. Voltage is measured at the main breaker, then at the branch breaker feeding the affected circuit. If the voltage fluctuates at the main, the problem is upstream — at the service entrance or the utility. If the voltage is steady at the main but fluctuates at the branch breaker, the problem is in the panel. If voltage is steady at the panel but the fixture flickers, the problem is in the circuit wiring between the panel and the fixture.
