Why Does My Circuit Breaker Keep Tripping?

How a Circuit Breaker Works
A circuit breaker is a safety switch that opens automatically when the current flowing through it exceeds its rating. A 20 amp breaker allows up to 20 amps of continuous current. When the circuit draws more than that, the breaker heats up internally, a bimetallic strip bends, and the breaker trips to disconnect the circuit. This prevents the wire from overheating and potentially starting a fire.
Understanding this mechanism explains why a breaker trips: something on the circuit is drawing more current than the breaker allows. The question is what and why.
The Three Causes of Repeated Tripping
Overloaded Circuit
An overloaded circuit is the most common reason a breaker trips. It means the total load on the circuit exceeds the breaker’s rating. This happens when too many devices are plugged into outlets on the same circuit, or when a single high-draw appliance is added to a circuit that was already near capacity.
Overload trips are gradual. The breaker may hold for minutes or even hours before tripping, because the bimetallic strip takes time to heat up enough to bend. If your breaker trips after running for a while but not immediately, overload is the most likely cause.
The fix is either reducing the load on the circuit or adding a new dedicated circuit for the high-draw device. In older homes where the kitchen, dining room, and living room share two or three circuits, adding a dedicated kitchen circuit solves most overload trips.
Short Circuit
A short circuit occurs when a hot wire touches a neutral wire or a ground wire. This creates a path of very low resistance, which causes a massive spike in current that trips the breaker instantly. Short circuits trip the breaker the moment you flip it back on, with no delay.
Short circuits happen inside outlets, switches, junction boxes, appliance cords, and anywhere insulation has been damaged. They are more dangerous than overloads because the current spike is much larger and can arc, generating heat that ignites surrounding materials.
A short circuit requires an electrician to diagnose and repair. The fault must be located and the damaged wiring or device must be replaced. Do not continue resetting a breaker that trips instantly.
Ground Fault
A ground fault occurs when current leaks from a hot wire to a grounded surface, such as a metal junction box, a metal pipe, or a wet surface. Ground faults are most common in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor outlets where water is present.
GFCI outlets and GFCI breakers are designed to detect ground faults and trip at much lower current levels than a standard breaker. If you have a GFCI breaker that trips repeatedly, the issue is likely a ground fault on one of the devices or in the wiring on that circuit.
When a Breaker Itself Is the Problem
Breakers wear out. A breaker that has been tripping and resetting for years develops internal damage to its mechanism. The bimetallic strip weakens, the contacts pit and corrode, and the breaker begins tripping at currents below its rating. This is called nuisance tripping and it mimics an overloaded circuit.
If a breaker trips on a circuit that is well within its capacity, the breaker itself may need replacing. This is a common fix on panels that are twenty or more years old.
When to Call an Electrician
Call an electrician if:
- The breaker trips instantly every time you reset it
- You smell burning or see scorching near the panel or an outlet
- The breaker or the wires connected to it feel warm to the touch
- The breaker trips on a circuit with a normal load
- A GFCI breaker trips repeatedly without an obvious water source
A breaker that trips once because you ran too many things is not an emergency. A breaker that trips every time, smells hot, or will not stay on needs circuit breaker repair before it damages the wiring or the panel.

Running both on the same circuit can pull 20 to 27 amps through a 20 amp breaker, which trips. The fix is a dedicated circuit for one of the appliances so they are no longer sharing the same 20 amp line.
