What Happens During a Kentucky Electrical Inspection?

Inspections happen after permitted work is complete but before walls close, and the inspector issues a pass or a corrections list.

Who Performs the Inspection

In Kentucky, electrical inspections are performed by state electrical inspectors employed by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction. These are not county inspectors or private inspectors. The state inspector covers a territory that may include multiple counties, which is why scheduling varies by location.

The inspector’s job is to verify that the permitted work meets the current edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC) as adopted by Kentucky. The inspector is not there to evaluate the quality of the work beyond code compliance. Clean, neat work that meets code passes. Messy work that meets code also passes. Work that does not meet code fails regardless of appearance.

What the Inspector Checks

Panel and Service Entrance

The inspector verifies that the panel is properly rated, that breakers are correctly sized for their circuits, that the bus bars are properly connected, and that the grounding and bonding are complete. The service entrance cable, meter base, and weatherhead are checked for proper sizing and installation.

Wire Sizing and Routing

Every circuit must use wire that matches its breaker rating. A 20 amp breaker requires 12-gauge wire. A 15 amp breaker requires 14-gauge wire. A 30 amp circuit requires 10-gauge wire. The inspector checks that wire gauge matches breaker size throughout the installation.

Wire routing is checked for proper support, protection where it passes through framing, and separation from heat sources. Romex running through a bored hole less than 1.25 inches from the edge of a stud must have a nail plate for protection. These details are what the inspector catches.

GFCI and AFCI Protection

Current code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, unfinished basements, outdoor locations, and laundry areas. AFCI protection is required on bedroom circuits and, under the most recent code editions, on most habitable room circuits. The inspector verifies that the correct protection is installed in every required location.

Box Fill

Every junction box, outlet box, and switch box has a maximum number of conductors it can contain based on its volume. Overfilling a box with too many wires is a code violation because it makes connections difficult and increases heat buildup. The inspector counts conductors in boxes to verify compliance.

Grounding and Bonding

The grounding system connects the electrical system to the earth through ground rods, water pipes, or other approved electrodes. Bonding connects all metal components of the electrical system together so that a fault has a clear path to trip the breaker. The inspector checks both systems for completeness and proper connection.

How to Prepare for an Inspection

Leave the Work Visible

Do not close up walls, ceilings, or chases until the inspector has signed off. The inspector needs to see the wiring, connections, and box fill. If walls are closed before inspection, the inspector can require them to be opened, which adds cost and delay.

Label the Panel

Every circuit in the panel should be labelled with the area or device it serves. Panel labelling is a code requirement, and an unlabelled panel will not pass inspection.

Have the Permit on Site

The permit must be available at the job site during the inspection. The electrician typically keeps it, but confirm that it is present before the inspector arrives.

Most inspection failures are minor and fixable:

  • Missing GFCI protection in a required location
  • Wire gauge mismatch: 14-gauge wire on a 20 amp breaker
  • Missing nail plates on wires near stud edges
  • Box fill violations in crowded junction boxes
  • Incomplete panel labelling
  • Missing bonding connection on a water pipe or gas line

None of these are major reconstruction. They are corrections that take an hour or two to fix, followed by a re-inspection.
